SOUTH GLENS FALLS — Shirley W. Bertz, 81, formerly of Camillus, New York and a resident of the Landing of Queensbury, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2018 at The Home of the Good Shepherd in South Glens Falls, New York.
She was born on June 5, 1936 in Little Falls, New York, when FDR was the president and a loaf of bread was 8 cents. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Marion (Johnson) Walthart.
Shirley attended Becker Jr. College in Worcester, Massachusetts and was a secretary at General Electric in Utica, where she caught the eye of an engineer, Les Bertz. They started their life together in 1957 and were married for almost 55 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and loving “Granny” who made all of her grandchildren feel special.
For over 40 years, Shirley and Les lived on Pear Tree Drive in Camillus, New York, where they raised their five children. It was a magical place and created a lifelong bond with neighbors and friends to this day. Shirley love traveling with her family. In the earlier years, it consisted of packing the trailer, children and the family dog, Fluff. As time went on, she traveled to Europe, Egypt, fishing trips to Canada, Maine, Cape Cod and Lake Tahoe. Shirley also enjoyed reading, playing bridge and a very busy social life.
After all of her children were in school, Shirley returned to the workforce at Longley Jones Management Corporation in Syracuse as a leasing agent, where she met and became dear friends with the late Barbara Panebianco.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Cameron David Bertz.
After the passing of her husband in 2012, Shirley found friendship and consolation in the company of her dear friend, Dick Rosenberger of Camillus, New York.
Survivors include her children, Pamela and her husband, David Boller, Eric and his wife, Theresa, Todd and his wife, Patti, Heidi and her husband, Christopher, and Scott and his wife, Trish; 12 grandchildren, Christian, Jordan, Lars, Wyatt, Tamsen, Lea, Molly, Logan, Van, Nella, Shay and Annalise; one brother, Gerald Walthart; as well as many dear and close friends.
Calling hours are scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2018 at Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on April 21 in Camillus at a time to be announced.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
