SOUTH GLENS FALLS — Michael A. McGarr, 79, of South Glens Falls passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Glens Falls Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born in 1938 in Glens Falls, the son of the late Dora (Robinson) McGarr.
He attended St. Mary/St. Alphonsus until the eighth grade and went on to graduate from Glens Falls High School. Mike received a scholarship to SUNY Cobleskill, where he earned his associate degree and continued on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SUNY Albany. He had over 20 hours above his master’s degree in business education from Oneonta and Elmira Colleges.
His teaching career would span 35 years, starting at Pottersville Central School in 1961, where he started their first business education program, and then on to Johnsburg schools. In 1964, he began teaching at Cooperstown Central School, where he would teach for 21 years. In 1985, Mike started teaching at Lake George Central Schools and retired in 1996 after 11 years. During his career, Mike assisted in the rewriting of the New York State Business Law Syllabus as part of his master’s degree dissertation. He also served on the education committee to assist in writing the 1990 accounting regents and contributed to future regents exams. During his retirement, he served as an adjunct professor for Adirondack Community College, was an elementary school mentor for Queensbury and was proud to work with the Home Instead, an organization that provided companion help for Alzheimer’s patients. While teaching in Cooperstown, he spent summers as an usher and guide for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
His hobbies included collecting records and memorabilia, swimming and walking. He was a good friend and number one fan of Patti Page.
In addition to his mother, Mike was predeceased by two sons, Michael McGarr, Jr. and Sean McGarr; his brother, Paul McGarr; sisters-in-law, Sandy and Louisa ‘Sis’; and his brother-in-law, George Harrington.
Michael is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alvira (Harrington) McGarr; a son, Daniel E. McGarr (Rebekah McMillan); grandchildren, Marie A., Daniel P., Brendan M. and Ryan M. McGarr; daughters-in-law, Rose and Donna McGarr; and former daughter-in-law, Debbie McGarr. He is also survived by extended family, Sharon and Fred Walden and Guy and Fran Harrington; and by several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
