QUEENSBURY -- Leona Mae Whalen Petramale, 79, of Queensbury, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at Saratoga Nursing Care in Saratoga.

She was born May 8, 1932 in New Brighton, Pa., the daughter of the late Henry Russell and Jessie May Hyde Whalen.

Leona was a graduate of New Brighton High School, Class of 1950. She then went on to graduate from Beaver Valley Hospital School of Nursing in New Brighton in 1953. In 1954, she graduated from Graduate Hospital, University of Pennsylvania, with a post-graduate degree.

She was a registered nurse for 33 years, working at hospitals in Philadelphia, Catskill, Poughkeepsie and Glens Falls.

Leona married Eugene Petramale on Nov. 5, 1955. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage, before he passed away June 12, 2011.

She was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband, Eugene; her brother, Henry Whalen; half-brother, Grant Laughren and his wife, Alma; and three half-sisters, Ruth Laughren; Alethea Klug and her husband, Bill, and Edna Compton and her husband, George.

Survivors include her daughter Karen Francett and her husband, Bryan, of Athens, N.Y.; her daughter Pamela Barbeau and her husband, Bruce, of Clifton Park; and her son, Mark Petramale, and his wife, Karen, of Queensbury. Also surviving Leona are her grandchildren, Steven and Sarah Petramale of Queensbury; her sister-in-law, Sue Whalen of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and


Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury.

Burial will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Veterans' Cemetery, Duell Road, Saratoga, N.Y.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Feb. 2, at the funeral home.

The family suggests donations be made to C.R. Wood Cancer Center, 102 Park St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
