STONY CREEK - Ernest White, age 92, of Harrisburg Road, died Monday morning, Feb. 23, 2009, at Adirondack Tri County Nursing Home.
Born on July 28, 1916, in Stony Creek, he was the son of Alonzo and Lodema (Lyng) White. He was a 1936 graduate of Hadley-Luzerne Central School.
Mr. White served in the United States Army during World War II as a radio operator, transmitting and receiving Morse code messages in England, France and Germany. He earned several medals including the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He married Mildred Rogers on June 29, 1940, in North Creek. Mrs. White died on Dec. 5, 1992 after 52 years of marriage.
Mr. White was a self-employed electrician. He served eight years as justice of the peace in Stony Creek, and eight years as roads commissioner.
He was a longtime member of the Knowlhurst Baptist Church, having served as deacon for 30 years, as treasurer for 15 years and as past president of the church council.
He was a charter member of the Stony Creek Fire Department and Sexton of Knowlhurst Baptist Cemetery. He helped to build the parsonage, entrance and Sunday school of the church.
He was a member of the William J. Varney American Legion Post 862, Lake Luzerne and the Warrensburg VFW Post No. 4821.
Mr. White enjoyed hunting, fishing, working and his church.
He was predeceased by his wife, two brothers, Clarence White and Lester White and three sisters: Lorna Black, Ilah Rayder and Genevieve Goodnow.
Survivors include four sisters: Mabel Thomas of Stony Creek, Geneva Rogers of Torrington, Conn., Gladys Edwards of Sharon Springs and Beulah White of Stony Creek; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Brewer Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne, where members of the Stony Creek Fire Company will pay its respects as a group at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Knowlhurst Baptist Church, 693 Harrisburg Road, Stony Creek with the Rev. Rex Fullam, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Knowlhurst Cemetery, Stony Creek.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Knowlhurst Baptist Church immediately following the services.
