November 13, 1915 — January 25, 2018 CHESTERTOWN — Emma Stiles Walkup died in her 102nd year on Jan. 25, 2018, at the Warren Center in Queensbury.
Born Nov. 13, 1915 in Shelving Rock, Fort Ann, she was the daughter of the late Jesse B. and Laura (Benton) Stiles.
Emma was an active member of many community organizations. Her career began in 1950, as an assistant in the cafeteria of Chestertown Central School. She continued her education at Syracuse and Cornell Universities, and became District Director of NY State School Food Service from 1950 to 1978. She was a devoted member of the Chestertown Community United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, New England Colony, and the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Atateka Rebecca Lodge. In retirement, Emma and her husband Bill spent 15 years wintering in Palm Harbor, Florida, where they made many new friends. Upon returning from Florida, Emma again entered her profession, serving the Senior Program for the Department of the Aging.
In 2012, her 96th year, Emma was honored by the Chestertown Central School Alumni Association, for a lifetime of achievement for the health and well being of generations of school children throughout her career at Chestertown Central School.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, William Danford Walkup; three brothers, Edward, Archie and George Stiles; and one sister, Olive Stiles Walkup.
Survivors include one son, William Danford (Joyce) Walkup of Fort Ann; two daughters, Louise W. (Gerald) Sweet of Chestertown and Sally W. (Wayne) Baxter of Chestertown; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nellie Stiles Johnson of Malta.
Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at Barton-McDermott Funeral Home, Inc., 9 Pine St., Chestertown.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Chestertown Community United Methodist Church, with pastor Kimberly Townsend and former pastor Doug Meyerhoff, officiating. Interment will be at Chester Rural Cemetery in the Spring.
