Cail MacLean took a gamble putting Mason McDonald on the playoff roster. The coach figured the goalie had earned the spot, but that meant the Adirondack Thunder started the playoffs with only one netminder.
The Thunder played two games with J.P. Anderson and rookie Connor Hicks, on an emergency tryout, and are poised to play another that way on Tuesday.
Anderson has more than earned the starting role, especially after his outstanding end to the regular season, but if he gets hurt, the Thunder are in trouble. They'd like to have McDonald back.
There might be hope on the horizon.
McDonald was reassigned to the AHL when Calgary's Chad Johnson was hurt and the Flames took a goalie from Stockton. Well, Johnson is back. He dressed for Saturday's game.
It seems likely then that Calgary will return Jon Gillies to Stockton, who will then return McDonald to Adirondack.
It's just a matter of exactly when. The Thunder would like it to be soon.
