As part of its Constitution Day celebration, I will be part of a panel discussion titled “Freedom of the Press in the Era of Fake News” at SUNY Adirondack this afternoon.

The event starts at 3 p.m. in Miller Auditorium in Dearlove Hall on the Queensbury campus.

Freedom of the press, the First Amendment and fake news are all important subjects for us all, and all have a special place in my heart.

On the panel with me will be Amanda Fries of the Times-Union.

Earlier this year, I spoke at Green Mountain College about a similar topic. I was surprised at how many engaged the students and faculty were. They understand something is going on, but they didn’t seem to know what.

I hope I convinced them that local newspapers like ours can be trusted. That we are hard-working men and women who try to do our best every day to tell the stories and report the news of our communities.

I’m looking forward to the discussion.
