When you have an experienced Saratoga reporter like Will Springstead, you want to use him in the best possible way.

There have been times in past years when we felt like Will was tied to the pressbox as he concentrated on the sport of thoroughbred horse racing.

This year, our Sports Editor Greg Brownell wanted to take a different approach.

He took off the handcuffs.

Will’s assignment this summer is to write a column each day that he is at the track. We want him to find stories that are uniquely Saratoga, that offer a variety to the horse racing experience that goes beyond the sport.

I’m happy to report Will is off to a great start with some fun, interesting columns during the first days of the week.

And we still have another five weeks to go.

I’m looking forward to seeing what he finds with his new-found freedom.
