It wasn't Fahrenheit 451 — it was worse.
The intent was different. The Florida man was burning books not to prevent others from reading, but because they were garbage in his eyes. And he needed to find a way to get rid of his garbage, Thursday afternoon.
However, the impact of his blaze of paperbacks was even worse than the censorship of book burners in the past. This instance of scorching texts caused a massive wildfire, which destroyed two homes in Nassau County, Florida.
"#GarfieldRoadFire was caused by someone burning paperback books off CR121 in Nassau County. Burning household garbage is illegal in Florida," tweeted the Florida Forest Service's Jacksonville office.
The man who lit the books will be issued a forestry bill for the cost of the equipment and workers needed to battle the blaze, and could be held civilly liable for the damage caused by the fire, which could add up to thousands of dollar according to CNN.
As if book burnings weren't bad enough already.
