Section II baseball finals

Fort Ann players line up for the team picture after their victory in the Class D final of the Section II Baseball Tournament on Tuesday at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy.

Well, first off, congratulations to Fort Ann and Hoosic Valley for their Section II Class D and C championships, respectively, as well as to Ticonderoga for its Section VII Class C title.

Also, "well done" to Greenwich, which overcame early season injuries to reach the Class C final. A lot of teams might have folded, but one thing you can count on with the Witches is battling until the last out.

Fort Ann got contributions from everyone, young and old, which is what it's going to need if it is to capture that state title that all the seniors said afterward is their aim. There were a few overly aggressive baserunning moves that backfired, but the Cardinals have plenty of time to tighten them.

Speaking of time, boy, do the Cardinals have plenty of THAT on their hands. It's nine days before the regional semifinal against the Section X champion. That section is only in its quarterfinal round. Ugh. I hope the Cardinals don't lose too much momentum on this extra-long break.

Fort Ann looked very solid in this win. I think it was a decent idea of Fort Plain to  throw a curve ball specialist against the Cardinals, but the young men this year were no Jesse Heroth. Once the patience kicked in, Fort Ann walloped the ball.

A solid Hoosic Valley team vs. an improving Ticonderoga squad in a regional semifinal has my curiosity piqued.
