The Phantoms dropped the first game of a two-game series with the St John's IceCaps, 2-1.
Max Macenaur put the IceCaps on the board first, 11:31 into the first period. Late in the frame, Cullen Eddy and Spencer Machacek dropped gloves in the Phantoms defenseman's first fight of the season.
Andrew Johnston tied the game up with his first professional goal in the second period. The rookie center redirected a slap shot from Eric Wellwood at 12:35.
The Phantoms outshot the IceCaps 15-5 in the second period, but could not get past Eddie Pasquale other than Johnston's goal.
Travis Ramsey put the IceCaps back on top for good at 9:11 in the third period, redirecting a shot from Ben Maxwell.
The Phantoms played the final 2:47 with a man advantage, starting with a power play resulting from a holding call on Macenaur. They pulled Scott Munroe for a minute of 6-on-4 play and then played the final 40 seconds 6-on-5.
Neither team scored a power play goal; each team had five opportunities.
The Phantoms hit the post three times in the game, twice by Danny Syvret and once by Brayden Schenn, but were bested by Pasquale's 32 saves. Munroe had 24 saves.
Marc-Andre Bourdon did not make the trip to St. John's. He also sat out the second half of Tuesday's practice - the team's only practice in Glens Falls this week. He said he felt fine and just needed a break at the time.
The Phantoms now fall to 1-2, while the IceCaps improve to 2-1. The teams will meet again Saturday at 6:00 EST.
