Glens Falls state football champions

Glens Falls players celebrate their win over Chenango Forks in the state Class B football championship game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse on Nov. 26, 2016. The Indians enter the 2017 season on a 13-game winning streak and high hopes for more excitement this fall.

UPDATED: Aug. 29 with schedule changes after Salem dropped varsity football.

The Section II football schedules for the 2017 season are out and I have posted the schedules for teams in the greater Glens Falls area.

There are crossover games between Class A and B this season — including one between former Foothills Council rivals Glens Falls and Queensbury. Class D also has open dates, some of which need to be filled.

Section II football kicks off the weekend of Sept. 1-2 in 2017. Playoffs and crossover games are set for Weeks 8 and 9, which are the weekends of Oct. 20-21 and 27-28. The Section II championship games are set for the weekend of Nov. 3-4. The state championships are scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 24-26) at the Syracuse Carrier Dome.

One other notable change this year is the move of the Eastern New York semifinals from their longtime home at Kingston's Dietz Stadium. The Eastern semis will be played at Middletown High School this year. (The Western semis also move this year, to Union-Endicott High School.) The Eastern semifinals had been played at Dietz since the full state playoffs began in 1993.

Some classification changes this season:

Granville, Greenwich and Hoosic Valley all drop from Class C to Class D this season, so there will be 11 teams in Class D this season, which means a split into two divisions. As it has for the last few seasons, Class D will still play an eight-game regular season with a four-team playoff. As such, the division breakdown makes no sense geographically — I'm hoping to learn why they were seemingly randomly put together. Putting Warrensburg in the same division with Canajoharie, Rensselaer and Helderberg Valley makes no sense whatsoever.

— According to Cambridge coach Doug Luke, the Class D divisions were set up randomly by blind draw.

Canajoharie is now merged with Fort Plain, joining Warrensburg (with Bolton) and Fort Edward (with Argyle) as D teams with mergers. Helderberg Valley (merger of Duanesburg and Berne-Knox) is playing down in class and will not be eligible for Class D playoffs.

Class C will have 14 teams, so it will have two seven-team north-south divisions instead of the recent three-division setups over the last few years.

Lansingburgh drops back from Class A to Class B, meaning Class B will have 11 teams in a two-division setup. Albany Academy and (as of Aug. 18) Salem will not field varsity football teams.

-- Cohoes returns to the varsity level this season, playing against Class D teams. Cohoes (Class B) and Helderberg Valley (Class C merger of Duanesburg and Berne-Knox) are playing down in class and ineligible for playoffs. They were placed in the two Class D divisions for scheduling purposes only -- games against them are considered non-league games and will not count in the Class D standings.

Class A will be one league with nine teams, and will therefore go with an eight-game regular-season and a four-team playoff — a first for Class A since the 2004 realignment.

Class AA sticks with the same 14-team setup as last season.

— So Classes AA, B and C will have eight-team playoffs following seven-game regular seasons, while Classes A and D will go with four-team playoffs starting in Week 9, following eight-game regular seasons.
