Glens Falls High School hoops games have become must-see opportunities for local hoops fans in the era of Joseph Girard III, and I had personally blocked off my Friday night to watch the Class B final, which we expected to be Glens Falls versus Mekeel Christian.

It would have been an intriguing rematch of last year's sectional final, but a tough Schalmont team had other ideas last night. Now local boys hoops fans are left hoping that Lake George, Whitehall, Saratoga Springs and Saratoga Catholic can keep the local seasons alive.

That is pretty lean pickings for this time of year, which is not good news for the finances of Cool Insuring Arena. A Glens Falls return for a sectional championship on a Friday night would have packed that building.

After sectionals weekend, the hoops junkies among us have to wait until March 23-24 for the return of the Federation Tournament to the arena.

(We can also spend time speculating/hypothesizing about whether Girard plays for Glens Falls his senior year, or chooses to go to Albany Academy or another prep school for his final season. From a selfish perspective, it would be nice to see him playing locally one more year, to see how high that state record scoring tally goes.)
