My wife came across some pictures of early last April that showed trees blooming, people in t-shirts and shorts. A year later, I spent the second weekend of April scraping snow and ice off my deck and my neighbor's porch, nearly tumbling on my icy driveway thanks to a lunatic puppy amid Friday's snowstorm.

All of the big box stores around here have been laughably in spring mode for a few weeks now. Plants, lifejackets, sandals and gardening equipment, you can find it all when we more realistically need sand, rock salt and a new snowblower spark plug.

I admire their optimism, but it's going to be a while before we have the weather to enjoy it.

Winter has been a solid four-plus months this time around. With each dreary weekend, we are getting cheated of spring and are one week closer to next winter.

I've tried to get out hiking and even fishing a couple of cold, high trout streams to will spring into an arrival. So far, it's not working.

The weather prognosticators say we may see 60 this weekend. I'll believe it when I see it. Until then, I am tuning up my fishing gear, and plotting out how to rework my garden in the event we get a growing season this year.
