U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, picked up an endorsement on Saturday from his Green Party opponent.
“You never know when it’s going to get more interesting," Donald Hassig, the Green Party candidate, said in a telelphone interview, after he issued a press release endorsing Owens.
“I will vote for Congressman Owens. I am asking my supporters to vote for Congressman Owens,” Hassig said in the press release.
Hassig said in the telephone interview he made the decision to back Owens after Siena Research Institute released a poll showing Doheny trailing Owens by just one percentage point.
Owens had 44 percent, Doheny 43 percent and Hassig 4 percent, with 9 percent undecided, with a +/- 3.9-percentage-point margin of error.
“When that poll came out saying that it was neck-and-neck, I said I don’t want to risk that,” he said.
Hassig said Owens has been willing to listen to his concerns about environmental pollutants.
“I was really looking forward to getting the vote on that (Green Party ballot) line for me, but that’s not the point. The point is just having the best person in there.”
