It's shaping up like a good, old-fashioned winter. The ski areas are humming, and there is ice on most small to medium-sized waters around here.

With below zero mornings predicted for the rest of the week, we could even be talking about some fishable ice on Lake George later this week.

Friends of Moreau Lake State Park reported Friday that the lake had 4 inches of ice and was open for ice fishing at that point. The staff at The Crossroads Country Store & Sport Shop reported on Facebook that the store had its live bait in for the season, including suckers and fathead minnows, with parts of nearby Schroon Lake being fished yesterday (Saturday).

Waters in the higher elevations of the central Adirondacks are all buttoned up and being fished, including Lake Durant, parts of Long Lake and Blue Mountain Lake.

As we saw last weekend with the tragedy on Edgecomb Pond, early ice can be treacherous. And basic equipment like an inflatable PFD or spikes is needed this time of year, in case you do go through.
