The Bangor Daily News in Maine published a crazy story this week about a group of men who rescued a sizable buck that fell through thin ice on a lake in Maine.

When I first saw the headline, I figured the deer must have been fairly close to shore to pull something like this off. The story and the efforts they made are close to unbelievable, but there is video with it to show at least part of what they did.

Unfortunately, wildlife often has trouble judging ice safety like we do. It's possible the buck was chasing a doe, or had been spooked by hunters, but either way, this majestic animal is alive today because of the efforts of some game wardens and sportsmen.

Sportsmen and women sometimes get a bad rap, but many/most of those of us who fish and hunt love nature and the outdoors, and understand that we play a part in the balance of things. These guys didn't have to risk their property, and even their lives, helping an agitated buck with some big antlers, but they did.
