Warm temperatures and rain are the last two weather conditions hunters want to hear are upcoming when they are preparing for a weekend of deer hunting.

But that is unfortunately what we will have this weekend, for the state's annual youth deer hunt, which runs from Saturday through Monday.

The annual hunt allows 14- and 15-year-olds to get out in the Northern or Southern zones with an adult mentor to supervise, and has been one of the great changes the DEC has made in recent years to get more young people into hunting. The pictures we see each year of beaming teens with their first bucks are priceless.

Warmth, rain and wind won't make their job easy this weekend, and maybe the unbelievably warm fall we have had will abate before the Oct. 21 Northern Zone rifle opener.
